MISSION
Blue Sky aims to serve the medical and developmental needs of abandoned and orphaned children in China, focusing on those living in welfare institutions, non-state orphanages and foster homes. We accomplish this by providing in-house care of orphans with medical needs in a homelike setting, and providing rehabilitation training sessions for disabled orphans and their caregivers.
Our main purpose is to better the lives of abandoned children and orphans in need by making healthcare and rehabilitation accessible. In addition, our doors are open to other volunteer groups who may need temporary housing and care for the children they are helping.

There are many reasons that have led us to the same conclusion, that we simply want to help the children.
As active volunteers we have had the opportunity to visit many orphanages and foster homes. In doing so, we have encountered numerous children in need of medical treatment and basic rehabilitation. For example,
Babies with cleft lips who are waiting for surgery. Because they have difficulty eating, they don't gain weight easily. Because they don't gain weight, the doctors don't want to do surgery so they wait for them to get stronger. This cycle continues because the caregivers may not know the best way to feed them, have the proper equipment or the time it takes to feed one of these children.
Children with disabilities who do not receive the needed rehabilitation to reach their full potential. This means a child who can be taught to feed himself, talk or walk, does not learn these important skills.
Children who have received orthopedic surgeries but no rehabilitation or care afterwards. Without proper therapy they often relapse to their previous condition or develop new problems.
Children who are waiting for surgery for spina bifida, congenital problems with their intestines, clubfeet and many other problems. They are often waiting due to lack of money and assistance, lack of proper medical care in their small hometown, or a place to stay if they have to come to Beijing.
and many more...
To be effective, both rehabilitation and medical care require close supervision and individualised attention, which mean more time and staff for each child. Currently many orphanages and foster homes are unable to provide this special treatment due to the number of children in their care and lack of funds.
Our grand plan is to give these children the help they need to recover and reach their full potential. We may have the child stay with us to gain weight, so that he is strong enough to undergo surgery. We may house a child after surgery to watch for complications or take care of special needs such as sterile bandage changes. We have a child stay with us after surgery so that he can be close to his doctor in Beijing for follow up. We may provide physical therapy to a child with cerebral palsey, or a baby slow to develop due to Downs Syndrome or blindness.
To aid the children, we must also provide their caregivers with the knowledge, skills and basic resources to help the child. A caregiver for each child is encouraged to stay with us at our home, so they may learn to change the bandages, monitor the condition, or learn the rehabilitation skills to help the child develop. We hope that by including the caregiver we can ensure continued good care once the child leaves our home. Also, we encourage the caregiver to use her new skills to help other children in her orphanage.
In cases where a caregiver from the oprhanage cannot accompany a child, our staff will care for the children with love and special attention.

We work with state and non-state orphanages, and various foundations throughout China, and actively seek out orphans who are in need of medical care. As needed, we arrange for the child’s treatment and surgeries by sourcing out the best surgeons and medical care facilities available in Beijing. When the condition is severe, we may look into sending the child overseas for the medical care needed and will fundraise for each child’s medical expenses on a case by case basis.
On occasion, the child’s surgery may be arranged by the orphanage directly, or through other charitable groups, and we help them in their efforts by providing support (transportation to hospitals for appointments or check-in, providing caretakers at the hospital to accompany the child), and a convenient and comfortable place to stay in Beijing. Essentially, we provide the child with an environment where they will thrive after surgery. Blue Sky has a homely environment, and the children are all treated as members of an extended family.
Blue Sky is managed daily by Dr Maria He, a Beijing doctor who took early retirement to join Blue Sky's efforts in helping the children. A long-time, dedicated volunteer for many years, having mostly helped orphans and disabled children, Dr He oversees the medical needs of the children and provides basic caretaking training to our staff. We maintain high standards of hygiene and care. Two of our caretaking staff also have diplomas in nursing.
Our staff will accompany a child in hospital during their stay for surgery or other medical care. They act as temporary parents to the children, and needless to say, loving bonds are formed. We have been very lucky to have found wonderful staff who really care for the children.

Provide short term rehabilitation for children with physical disabilities and conditions which cause secondary developmental delay.
· Teach family or caregivers how to work with child emphasizing improving functional abilities in his home or institutional setting
· Teach basic rehabilitation concepts that can be used to assist other disabled children when the caregiver returns to his institution.
· Each child will get a written program and educational material will be given to the caregivers
Our Rehabilitation Center is partially supported by BICCO and China Care Foundation.
We ask caregivers and foster parents to accompany each child when possible.
· having the familiar adult will give child sense of comfort, security, and continuity in new, frightening situation
· caregiver can give us a true picture of child's current abilities and what he is expected to be able to do at 'home'
· be responsible for daily care of child which will allow us to function with less staff. We assume primary role of teacher and supporter in addition to providing accommodations and meals

The Blue Sky Healing Home is dedicated to an abandoned baby girl, by the name of Tian Bao. She came into our world with a massive abdominal defect and was given little hope to survive. With a fighting spirit like no other, Tian Bao did survive and was brought to Beijing for proper treatment and care. She has touched the hearts of many during her healing process, and is the most feisty and intelligent little girl in town. She will be 2 years old in June 2005. For more on her story, please visit BaoBao's Story
Blue Sky hopes to give many more little Tian Baos (which means “Heavenly Treasure” in chinese) the chance they deserve in life.
A little about the founders of Blue Sky
Molly Albers and Tania Suhandinata share the same vision of bettering the lives of disabled and sick orphans. On several occasions when visiting orphanages together, the same thought would cross their minds, “if only we could take this child out for a little while”.
Molly is a physical therapist from the US, who has been in China since July 2001. Her work has included teaching medical professionals and orphanage staff about rehabilitation for children with disabilities, providing training and physical therapy for several foster homes and contributing to a rehabilitation textbook that will be published in Chinese. In the course of her work she has visited over 20 orphanages throughout China from Heilongjiang to Inner Mongolia to Guangzhou. She is thrilled to open Blue Sky as a way of helping the children with their individual conditions but also to spread the concepts of rehabilitation to more caregivers and hopefully affect more children indirectly.
Tania from Singapore, has been an active volunteer with BICCO (Beijing International Committee for Chinese Orphans) since August 2003, visiting orphanages, organizing volunteer efforts and helping at Ping An Medical Foster Home, where her most rewarding moments came from witnessing a sick child receive the medical treatment needed, and recover with the love, care and patience of the caretakers and volunteers. With Ping An always being full, as well as other foster homes, and kids needing help having to wait their turn, it didn’t take long before opening another medical foster home seemed necessary. Her husband, Pierre, comes home one night after months of being bombarded with daily accounts of kids and “if onlys”, and says “Let’s forget buying fancy 5th year anniversary gifts, we’ll open a home instead”, so what can a girl say, but goodbye diamonds, hello hard (but rewarding) work and let’s help the little Tian Bao Baos of China!

Blue Sky is located in the northeast of Beijing, in a local compound called Ma Quan Ying. It is situated conveniently near the expatriate compounds of Beijing Riviera and Quan Fa, hence having a nice and clean environment. A local hospital is 5 mins away on foot for emergencies.
Our house is a 280 sqm semi-detached house with a small courtyard, where we are growing some vegetables. There are 6 bedrooms in total, and 3 bathrooms, and minor renovations have been done to make the home wheelchair accessible.
A dear friend of ours, who does not wish to be named, but whom we are forever grateful to for her hard work, enthusiasm and support, has generously donated our internal wall painting. A very professional paint job was done by Maple Place at Beijing Riviera, who have also been extremely generous to us, giving us lots and lots of furniture. Our home now looks like a villa at Beijing Riviera !
We are very thankful to all the people who have been giving us donations, and helping us with our needs.

1 - come volunteer
2 - help raise funds for surgeries or operational expenses
3 - help get donations from hotels & other sources for used bedding, blankets, towels, pillows, etc. (we distribute these to orphanages as well)
4 - sponsor an ayi for a year? (800yuan a month), sponsor our therapy translator (1500yuan a month) - including yearly bonus
5 - Cash sponsorship of some of our costly expenses: Infant formula (up to 1000yuan a month), Diapers (up to 1000yuan per month), Electricity/Utilities (1000yuan per month), Medicines: On average, our monthly over the counter pharmacy items are about 500 yuan per month (items like vitamins, cod liver oil, nursing supplies).

We will always need to collect baby and children's clothes and toys. This is because we visit and work with many different orphanages around China, and each time, bring them something from our stash of donations. We also want the children that stay with us to go home with the clothes that they had been wearing in our home, and even take the toys they enjoyed playing with, and then some for their friends at the orphanage.

蓝天医疗孤儿院,坐落在北京郊区香江花园邻近的马泉营乡,
这里是一位可敬的新加坡公民Tania女士建立的,已经建立3年。
这位女士放弃了在新加坡的生活和工作,与丈夫商议在中国买了房屋照顾这些孩子;
最初是因为有位孩子先天缺陷,肚皮上的皮肤只有层膜,
内脏器官呈现在人们眼前,不能收到机体的保护,需要手术;
还有个孩子,先天一侧缺少肋骨;
有的孩子先天膀胱外翻;
这里最大的孩子9岁,其他的有1-2岁的;
膀胱外翻的孩子送去新加坡做过手术,正在恢复中;
有的孩子是来自教会的修女,有的来自偏远地区的孤儿院,
都是弃婴,这些孩子能够被抚养但没有能力治疗;
所以辗转来到Tania开办的治疗孤儿院;
这些孩子经过治疗后逐渐恢复健康,
也在积极地找领养家庭;
由于观念上的差别,很多中国家庭来咨询,
由于希望领养健全的孩子,没有一个中国家庭成功领养,
目前有2个美国家庭和1个加拿大家庭达成领养意愿,
有2个孩子成功领养;
待续
